First, can anyone say whether such a mentality and a vital attitude is familiar to the inhabitants of Western Europe, or to the “internal emigration” only the “mysterious Russian soul” is capable of?
Secondly, are there today in Russia “internal emigres”, and if they do, then maybe now this phenomenon is qualitatively different from what was in pre-perestroika years?

I will not speak for all the inhabitants of Western Europe, but for some reason it seems to me that the term “internal emigration” was the product of the Brezhnev era (which was later labeled the “stagnation era”). As I understand it, the term expressed purely nominal participation of some citizens in the life of the state and society, lack of faith in the official version of the meaning of “Soviet being” and an internal (unuttered) protest.
